‘I definitely didn’t give him anything that I thought was too hot to be spoken on by a 16-year-old,’ Rae tells MTV News.By Shaheem Reid

Kanye West’s Twitter spawned one of the most talked-about (and unexpected) musical collaborations in years — and the song was only finished Wednesday.

West and Justin Bieber started talking on Twitter a few days ago about making a remix of the Biebs’ “Runaway Love.” ‘Ye suggested Raekwon get involved, and the next day, the Chef and the Louis Vuitton Don were in New York’s Electric Lady Studios knocking out verses.
“Kanye was just being Kanye,” Rae told MTV News about the session. “He was definitely excited. The energy in the room was already speaking for itself. It was time to get up and have fun on the track together. We was drinking, laughing, being normal cats. At the same time, we had a houseful of celebrities in the house as well. [Kanye] was moving through the facility checking out the studios he had. He had three studios in there.
“You had Akon in the building. Mos Def was just chillin’. Mos is a good friend of ‘Ye’s,” Rae added. “You had Charlie Wilson, the legendary cat from the Gap Band. Chris Rock walked in. These are guys that really respect who ‘Ye is. ‘Ye’s energy is cool. He’s a normal cat. A normal Chicago/world cat. Very mature. Having a great time.”
Rae said his followers on Twitter alerted him that Kanye and JB were talking on their pages about collaborating and had brought his name up. He didn’t hesitate to let them know he wanted in.
“This is a conversation that extended from the Twitter thing,” the Staten Island general explained. “Kanye was having a conversation with Justin over the Twitter. They came up with this great idea to have me involved. I was told to check it out and see what they talking about. They was right. They was saying, ‘This is something Kanye and Justin want to do.’ So automatically, first thing I do is hit them back and say I’m with it. Definitely, it created a movement. A lot of people want to see what could be the outcome to this remix. It’s definitely a hot remix.”
For the past year, most of Rae’s accolades have been coming via his raw street music, most exemplified by 2009’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II LP. Obviously, Rae didn’t go into the “Pyrex Vision” or “Surgical Gloves” zone with his rhymes for Bieber’s fanbase.
“All I did was ride the beat and listen to what he was singing to,” Chef said of his rhymes on the “Runaway Love” remix. “I can go basic when I want to. I can go rated R, I can go rated PG. I definitely didn’t give him anything that I thought was too hot to be spoken on by a 16-year-old. I know how to read beats, and listening to the record, I just complemented. At the end of my 16 [bars], when you do hear Justin coming, it fits and it’s a great sound. I didn’t go crazy. One thing people gotta recognize about me, I’m the Chef. I know how to make spicy food, I know how to make food that ain’t spicy. I made something that fit the criteria.
“Me and Kanye are just here to sprinkle a little bit more love on this man’s success and all our success,” he added.
Rae didn’t exactly have Bieber Fever before this collabo, but he respects the teen’s work. Chef said he recognized Bieber’s star quality and potential when he saw him perform last year. The MC hasn’t heard an entire Justin album yet, but his kids are big fans.
The “Runaway Love” remix has also sparked the opportunity for more Raekwon/ Kanye West collaborations. “We sat down and we talked about it, we talked about doing things in the future. This is just the beginning,” the Wu-Tang co-founder revealed. “This is something that was supposed to happen a long time ago. He started throwing on them tracks, ideas started coming to my head. I was like, ‘If this cat produces a Rae and Ghost record, what could come out of it?’ Every album, he evolves. He’s always doing the extra, or absurd, the abnormal, but it sounds crazy.”
On Tuesday, Rae released his Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II: Gold Edition on iTunes. The set includes new songs, remixes and music videos. The project helps commemorate the 15th anniversary of his classic first Linx.

Ke$ha is, without question, one of the biggest breakout stars of 2010. A slurring, whirling, hard-partying pop oddity (who may also be a genius) with a #1 album and a boatload of hit singles to her name, not to mention more than a few enemies. She even has under her star-spangled belt, her very own, very public WTF debacle in the form of a rather, uh, divisive “Saturday Night Live” performance.

Drew Barrymore recalls an ex’s unsuccessful love letter, while Justin Long’s flower purchase backfires.By Kara Warner

The topic of love and relationships is a loaded one. It’s full of drama, angst, joy — basically a smorgasbord of complex emotions that, no matter how serious and life-changing, can also be rife for comedic interpretation.
One such interpretation is Drew Barrymore and Justin Long’s R-rated romp “Going the Distance,” which opens Friday. In the film, the are-they-or-aren’t-they-dating Barrymore and Long play a new couple who try to make a long-distance relationship work. There are expensive plane tickets, romantic gestures, arguments, etc.

Speaking to the romantic gestures, because there are a few in the film, we asked Barrymore and Long if they had ever had one backfire.
“I once got sent an e-mail that was written in a sarcastic tone, but the person buried the lead and didn’t say he was joking,” Barrymore said of an ex’s attempt at a love letter. “So everything in it was as horrible as you can imagine. That wasn’t funny. That was a really poorly executed romantic gesture. I remember another boyfriend, he bought me a cameo [silhouette pendant], and he said it reminded him of me. And I thought, ‘This old, silhouetted lady reminds you of me? Huh. OK.’ ”
Long (who was not the giver of the aforementioned cameo) revealed that his good-intentions-gone-bad gesture involved an unfortunate mix-up of an ex’s preference in flowers.
“This was actually a Valentine’s Day thing,” he said. “I went to the florist, and I saw these amazing orchids. There were, like, six orchids. It was tons of money … but I thought, ‘I’m going to do it. These are beautiful, and I’m pretty sure this person loves orchids,’ ” Long recalled. “I brought them home. She was always so appreciative of just the smallest gestures I did, so I was like, ‘Her head’s going to explode.’ ”
Unfortunately for Long, his memory was a little skewed. “She was like [he winces] ‘I … oh … thank you,’ ” Long re-enacted. “She had this story that was like a really troubling, traumatic experience that had happened to her that involved orchids that she had told me. I knew there was something with orchids, I just didn’t remember that it was an awful association. It was bad. She was molested by a guy named Fred Orchid,” he joked.

‘Night Chronicles’ trilogy is a world where the ‘worst things happen,’ director tells MTV News.By Josh Horowitz

M. Night Shyamalan

Photo: MTV News

M. Night Shyamalan is not letting the rather mixed reviews for “The Last Airbender” darken his easygoing spirit or dampen his creative verve. Late last month, as “Airbender” continued to rake in dough overseas, Shyamalan sat down with MTV News to chat about his upcoming “Devil,” which follows five strangers trapped in an elevator — one of whom just might be the Prince of Darkness.
The film is the first in his planned “Night Chronicles” trilogy, a series based on his original ideas and helmed by other directors, and Shyamalan seems to relish the idea of getting out of the director’s chair and into the role of producer, a job he likened to being the goalie on a hockey team.

‘I appreciate the people for showing up and judging for themselves,’ he tells MTV News.By Shaheem Reid

T.I. in “Takers”

Photo: Columbia Pictures

While early estimates had “The Last Exorcism” edging out “Takers” at the box office this weekend, T.I. says not so fast. According to a recalculated tally on BoxOfficeMojo.com, his heist film, also starring Idris Elba and Chris Brown, came out on top, grossing $20.5 million vs. the horror movie’s $20.3 million.
“It was so tight, they kinda misinformed people prematurely and gave out the wrong information,” Tip said about the initial numbers. “But officially, as it stands right now, ‘Takers’ is the #1 movie in the country, contrary to popular belief. In my heart, I felt it would be.

“Its kinda like the Obama election,” Tip continued. “Not at all as important, but you felt like it was supposed to happen … unless it was some bullsh– in the game, it would likely happen. I’m not in any way trying to compare the magnitude of importance [of the presidential election] to this [box-office] situation, but I’m just trying to somewhat rate my anticipation. Thanks to everyone that supported. Critics were very quick to sign up and criticize the film. I appreciate the people for showing up and judging for themselves. And tweeting and putting out the word of mouth that this really was a good film.”
Tip did more than his share to promote the film this weekend. On Friday, he was in Atlanta treating his hometown fans to the flick, and then he headed to the Midwest on Sunday to do the same.
“All weekend I been out,” he said. “If I went and the line was packed, I bought all the tickets. Everybody inside who had already bought the tickets, I bought the concessions — popcorn, candy, slushees, sodas. I did that in Atlanta on Friday and Saturday. Sunday, I was in Mount Pleasant [Michigan] with [Ludacris for a concert]. … I went before the concert and took pictures and signed autographs for everyone who bought tickets. And after the show, I went in after the movie theater had closed. They remained open so they could show the film, man. At 11:30 or 11:55. That allowed us to have two more sold-out shows. I appreciate all the people who supported. It was really the energy. The energy surrounding the project was unmatched.
“We were in less theaters, we were in smaller theaters [than 'The Last Exorcism'],” Tip said about the obstacles for “Takers.” “They were in theaters that held 350 and 400. We were in theaters that held 150 and 185, 225. We had a stronger per-screen average, which means all of the screens that we were viewed on and showed on, we had more sold-out shows than they did. It was more people in line for ‘Takers’ than it was for that movie. It didn’t matter how many more screens than us they were on. It kept it close, but they couldn’t bring out the victory, simply because the people demanded it. The quality of ['Takers'] spoke volumes of what the people wanted to have in the #1 slot.”
After the film’s successful debut weekend, Tip was on the phone Monday morning (August 30) with the filmmakers about getting a “Takers” prequel greenlit. Musically, he’s dropping a song in the next few days called “I Pledge Allegiance to the Swag.”
